Thappad is a story that revolves around a man, Vikram and his family. His wife, Amrita in this movie chose to be a housewife by choice. Vikram is a businessman, who is seeking promotion from his company and Amrita sometimes teacher dance to a girl in her neighbourhood. Here, it isn't the case that man doesn't loves Amrita, but yes he didn't recognizes the work done by her. He couldn't see the sacrifices made by her for the sake of his home and family.

The story revolves around the promotion of Vikram for London's office, which he would lead being the office head, but due to politics someone else is elected for the post, and he is made the CEO. This information is acknowledged, when he has thrown his promotion party.

Due to this scenario, he gets in to a conflict with his senior, who's there to attend the party. He slaps Amrita, by mistake, but in front of everyone, when she comes to control his rage and stop his fight.

He isn't sorry for the deed and tells that this was done first time and it won't be repeated. He even considers that slapping wasn't much big issue and it was his legacy.

Amrita leaves home, where her mother and brother try to ettle the issue and send her back home. But her father is her moral support and tells her to do what she wants.

Later the case turns to such a moment that Vikram prepares a legal notice stating, Amrita to return home and that she is mentally disturbed and nothing happened that night. The paper also mentioned that she also tried to harm his mother.

After reading this, Amrita decides to fight for herself, by taking help of a lawyer Netra. Meanwhile, she realizes that she is pregnant and tells the same to Vikram. A pooja is organised by her mother in law, where she cries in her lap telling about everyone's mistakes. 

But the worst things can not be undone. Vikram gets the offer as head of London  office, but he is unable to set up there and leaves everything and returns home. Finally she wins the case and gets a divorce. Although, Vikram is sorry for his deed, but that's too late for the instance.
