Question 8. Define the characteristics of ratio.
Answer 8. Characteristics of ratio are as follows -
1. While finding the ratio between two quantities , both the quantity should hae the same unit , e.g , there can be a ratio between 20 gm and 50 gm but not between 20 kg and 40 metres.
2. Ratio is a fractional number . So, if both of its terms are multiplied or divided by the same number , the ratio remains unaltered.
3. Ratio has no unit.
4. The two numbers between which a ratio is expressed are called the terms of the ratio. The first number is called the antecedent and the second number is called the consequent . For example , in the ratio 2:3 , 2 and 3 are the terms of the ratio ; 2 is the antecedent and 3 is the consequent.
5. Ratio should not be confused as a fraction.
