Shama is a voice that is unforgettable. A voice from the U.K. that captures the sweetness of India, with an energy that is simply mesmerizing. A versatile and very capable singer who has been performing since childhood to audiences around the world.
Shama, born in Libya, is very much attached to her Indian roots and its music, having had her early influences from Bollywood music from a young age. Impressively, she had her own band at the tender age of 10, performing regularly on Voice of Kenya T.V. before moving to U.K. Having received her vocal training from Smt. Swati Natekar and Smt. Krishna Chakraborty, Shama went onto developing her own voice and style. Her influences represent her Eastern and Western upbringing from legendary Hindi vocalists such as Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bosle to contemporary pop divas such as Celine Dion and Madonna.
Shama believes that nothing is a co-incidence and that what is meant to be will always be, and it is with her strong spiritual belief that she embarked on her music career. In 1994 she started touring with the very popular Shama and Friends band, wowing audiences in S. America, Caribbean, West Africa, Dubai, Europe and nationally over UK. Shama has also performed at the prestigious ‘Diwali on Trafalgar Square’ at London’s famous landmark for 4 years in a row, the only artist to do so! She has also performed alongside artistes from the Bollywood music industry and her vocals even featured on Geri Halliwell’s, (better known as Ginger Spice) debut album ‘Schizophonic’.
In early 2009, together with talented music producer Hinal Pattani, Shama decided to step onto the bigger arena of the UK Asian urban music scene with a brand new live band and original songs. Hinal hand picked the finest musicians in the UK to form ‘The 515 Crew’, a young and dynamic band. Under Hinal’s experience and musical direction, the aim was to create a fresh new sound, bringing influences from the Bhangra, Bollywood, Urban and World Fusion music circuits. Adding to this heady mix, Shama brought with her, a beautiful voice, years of experience in the business, a huge clientele, and not forgetting, a following! Together, Shama and the 515 Crew were a perfect match!
With Hinal’s catchy melodies, Shama added a another feather in her cap by making her debut as a lyric writer and penning the words to her first release, ‘Maahi’, a romantic track which soon became popular on Asian radio and tv stations right across UK. This was followed up by ‘Diljaani’, an upbeat catchy number which was well received by radio and club DJ's nationwide. The track earned her a spot as Bobby Friction's featured BBC Introducing artist. Shama’s third release with The 515 Crew is ‘Baarish’, a beautiful ballad with two versions, including a darker Drum ‘n’ Bass version.
Shama has quickly become one of the UK’s most popular Asian vocalists, particularly amongst the fusion Bolly-Urban scene. Whilst doing regular performances, writing, producing and releasing new songs, Shama and her band are working on material for a U.K. tour and several performances outside of the UK. The coming months will be the most exciting for this U.K. based artiste with a lot of new developments in the pipeline.
