Biography of Lata Mangeshkar :
Lata Mangeshkar's career began in 1942 when Master Vinayak gave her a small role in Navyug Chitrapat's Marathi movie Pahili Mangalaa-gaur, in which she sang "Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai". Her first Hindi song was Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu for the Marathi film, Gajaabhaau (1943). After Master Vinayak's death in 1948, music director Ghulam Haider mentored Lata as a singer. He gave Lata her first major break with the song "Dil Mera Toda" from Majboor (1948). Then came "Aayega Aanewaala" from Mahal (1949) which was a defining moment in her career.
The 1950s saw Lata sing for the era's biggest music directors, including Anil Biswas, Shankar-Jaikishan, Naushad, S. D. Burman, Hemant Kumar, Salil Chowdhury, Khayyam, Ravi, Roshan, Kalyanji-Anandji, Sudhir Phadke, Madan Mohan and Usha Khanna. It was under Salil Chowdhury that Lata won her first Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for "Aaja Re Pardesi" from Madhumati (1958).
In 1960, Lata ruled the playback scene with Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya from Mughal-E-Azam, composed by Naushad, and Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh from Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. In 1962, she picked her second Filmfare Award for Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil from Bees Saal Baad, composed by Hemant Kumar. After reuniting with S. D. Burman in 1963, Lata sang a line-up of classics including Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai, Gata Rahe Mera Dil and Piya Tose from Guide (1965), and Hothon Pe Aisi Baat from Jewel Thief (1967). This decade also saw Lata's association with Madan Mohan and Laxmikant-Pyarelal produce a string of hits. She recorded duets with all the leading male singers of her era, including Mukesh, Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar.
Pakeezah in 1972 featured Lata masterpieces including Chalte Chalte and Inhi Logon Ne. Her hits with Rahul Dev Burman include Amar Prem (1972), Caravan (1971), Kati Patang (1971) and Aandhi (1975). Lata won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1973 for Beeti Na Bitai from Parichay, and then again in 1975 for Roothe Roothe Piya from Kora Kagaz. She also released an album of Mirabai's bhajans, Chala Vaahi Des, composed by her brother Hridayanath Mangeshkar, including Saanware Rang Raachi and Ud Jaa Re Kaaga.
Mangeshkar has sung for almost all the Yash Chopra films including Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), Darr (1993), Yeh Dillagi (1994), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Mohabbatein (2000), Mujhse Dosti Karoge (2002) and Veer Zaara (2004).
Some other notable associations for Lata were her first duet with S. P. Balasubrahmanyam in 1981 for Ek Duje Ke Liye. A. R. Rahman recorded songs with her such as Jiya Jale (Dil Se), Khamoshiyan Gungunane Lagin (One Two Ka Four) and O Paalanhaare (Lagaan). In 2001, she recorded her first Hindi song with Ilaiyaraaja, for the film Lajja (2001).
Lata Mangeshkar has won several awards including Padma Bhushan (1969), Padma Vibhushan (1999), Bharat Ratna (2001), three National Film Awards and four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards.
