Biography of Gulzar :
Sampooran Singh Gulzar, affectionately known as Gulzar Saab has made an indelible mark on the film industry with his magical words and thoughts. Born in Deena, (now in Pakistan) Gulzar came to Delhi in search of a career after the partition. After some struggle, he managed to impress the noted film makers - Bimal Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and started to assist them. He kick started his career as a lyricist with Bimal Roy's 'Bandini' and 'Kabuliwala'. The songs proved to be absolutely magical and still do magic to ears. Gulzar's work was widely appreciated and he soon became a recognized name in the industry.
From here, Gulzar went on to write some memorable lyrics for great movies like 'Aashirwad', 'Mere Apne', 'Parichay', 'Aandhi', 'Mausam', 'Kinara', 'Namkeen', 'Sadma' and 'Angoor'. The lyrics for 'Gol Maal' won him the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award. The very next year, he was again honored with this award for 'Thodi Si Bewafai'. The National Award soon came for his work in the much acclaimed 'Ijaazat'. Gulzar Saab has done some of his best work with the renowned music composer Rahul Dev Burman. In 1971, Gulzar successfully ventured into direction with 'Mere Apne'. Since then, he has exemplified his film making talent by giving us films like 'Aandhi', 'Koshish', 'Parichay', 'Mausam', 'Lekin', 'Maachis' and 'Hu Tu Tu'.
In his career span of forty years, Gulzar Saab has written stories for around sixty films, directed seventeen movies and penned copious lyrics. Even today, his magic of words is as spell bounding in films like 'Bunty Aur Bubli', 'Filhaal', 'Asoka', 'Saathiya', 'Aks', 'Khoobsurat', 'Pinjar', 'Makdee', 'Dil Vil Pyar Vyar', 'Chachi 420', 'Satya' among many more. He continues to write poetry in Urdu and has teamed with Jagjit Singh to come out with a ghazal album titled 'Marasim'. He is also behind 'Mirza Ghalib' - a serial that was aired on Doordarshan which was actually a tribute to the legendary poet. Gulzar Saab has been awarded the Sahitya Academy Award for his collection of short stories 'Dhuaan'. He has also been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi Cinema.
