Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad, known as VS Naipaul, is an Indo-Trinidadian-British writer who primarily works on novels focusing on the legacy of the British Empire\'s colonialism. He has also written non-fiction that includes travel writing and essays.

Naipaul is the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature and numerous other literary prizes, including John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, Somerset Maugham Award, Hawthornden Prize, WH Smith Literary Award, Booker Prize, David Cohen Prize for a lifetime\'s achievement in British Literature.

Naipaul was born in Trinidad to parents of Indian descent. He is currently married to Nadira Naipaul, a former Pakistani journalist.

Naipaul was earlier married to Englishwoman Patricia Hale for 41 years, till she died due to cancer. According to a biography, the two shared a close relationship with regards to Naipaul\'s work—Pat was the unofficial editor for Naipaul—but the marriage was not particularly a happy one. Naipaul regularly visited prostitutes in London, and later had a long-term affair with another married woman.

The Times ranked Naipaul seventh on their list of "the 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
