Thomas Hughes was born in 1822 at Uffington in former Berkshire (now called Oxfordshire). His father was John Hughes who was the editor of the Boscobel Tracts. He studied at Rugby School when Dr. Thomas Arnold was the headmaster. He excelled at sports and attended Oriel College, Oxford. He ended up being Queen’s Counsel and a bencher.
Hughes became a Member of Parliament as a Liberal for Lambeth and Frome. He also became the first President of the Co-operative Congress. He was one of the founders of the Working Men\'s College in Great Ormond Street and became the Principal of the college.
