Hector Hugh Munro known by the pen name Saki or H H Munro, was a British writer remembered and read for his witty, mischievous and occasionally macabre stories. He is considered a master of the short story and compared to the likes of O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. He claims that he has been influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, Rudyard Kipling and P. G. Wodehouse.

Beside his short stories (that were initially published in newspapers and then compiled into volumes), he wrote a few plays, and a historical study.

Saki wrote books in a style studded with epigrams, with well-contrived plots and surprise endings. His writings reveal a vein of cruelty. His popular works include Tobermory, The Open Window, Sredni Vashtar, Laura, and The Schartz-Metterklume Method.

Saki was born in Akyab, Burma which was a part of the British Empire. In 1872, he had visited England, where his mother Mary miscarried and soon died. Two-year-old Hector stayed back in England and was brought up by his grandmother and aunts in a stern puritanical household.

In England he started his career as a journalist for newspapers like the Westminster Gazette, Daily Express, Bystander, Morning Post, and Outlook. He has also worked as a foreign correspondent for The Morning Post, which he eventually gave up and settled in London.

Munro was homosexual but back then sexual activity between men was a criminal offence. Therefore "that side of Munro\'s life had to be secret."
