Robin Cook is an American novelist and a physician. His writings are most famously known for the medical thriller. He has also written books on medicine and public health. Most of his novels have been listed in the New York Times bestsellers list. Having sold more than a 100 million copies of his books, his books have been featured in Reader’s Digest also.
Robin Cook was born on May 4, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York. He had an elder brother and a younger sister. During his middle school, Robin Cooks always wanted to be an archaeologist. With the passage of time, his interest gradually shifted to medicine.
He graduated from Wesleyan University with a major in chemistry and a distinction in government. He then went on to attend the Columbia College of Physician and Surgeons while at the same time working in a blood/gas chemistry laboratory in support of the cardiac surgery team at the Columbian Presbyterian Hospital during nights and weekends.
After he completed his studies at Columbia College, he was drafted into the Navy. He attended submarine school and navy diving school. It was during his time in the Navy when he wrote his first novel, The Year of The Intern. Another book called A Medical Watch Standers Guide to Saturation Diving was also published during this time.
When he completed his military service, he studied ophthalmology at Harvard. Following the completion, he matriculated as a full time student at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He also opened a private practice of ophthalmology in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and accepted a clinical position at Harvard Medical School.
Robin Cook was married to Jean Reeds in the year 1998. In September the following year, they had their first child- a son who was named Carmen Jones Cooks. He was humorously offered a contract on his first novel.
To date, Robin Cook has published about thirty novels. Most of his novel deals with medical procedures. His novels have also been adopted into movies, including one of his first novels, Coma. He was also awarded “Author of Vision” by the RP International Organization in 2002. In 2004, the United States President George W. Bush appointed him to the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Board of Trustees.
