Robert Browning was an English poet and playwright. He is best remembered for dramatic verse, monologues that made him one of the foremost Victorian poets.

Robert Browning was born in South London, England. He was the only son of Sarah Anna and Robert Browning. His father was a well-paid clerk for the Bank of England.

By 12, Browning had already compiled a book of poetry which he later destroyed, as he did not find a publisher. He disliked life at school and hence he was educated at home by a tutor. By 14, he has learnt French, Greek, Italian and Latin. He admired Romantic poets, especially Shelley.

He is said to have inherited sound musical ability from his mother and composed beautiful arrangements of songs. He refused a formal career and decided to dedicate himself to poetry. He stayed at home until the age of 34, financially dependent on his family.

Browning’s famous mainly for his dramatic monologues. His monologues inadvertently "give away" a lot about the central character by justifying past actions, or explaining his case to a silent spectator. Porphyria\'s Lover is a very well-received monologue.

His writings are said to have influenced later poets including T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound.
