Roald Dahl was born on 13 September, 1916 in Llandaff, Glamorgan. He was an English novelist, fighter ace, screenwriter, and a short story writer. He is mostly known for his works in The Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Big Friendly Giant, and The Witches. He became one of the world’s bestselling authors. Roald was born to Sofie Magdalene Dahl and Herald Dahl who were Norwegians. At the age of three his sister Astri who was seven years old died of appendicitis. That same year his father also died at the age of 57 due to pneumonia. As a child, he attended The Cathedral School in Llandaff. He was later transferred to a boarding school in Saint Peter’s, England. In the year 1929, Roald attended Repton School in Derbyshire. After completing his high school he joined the Public School’s Exploring Society and went for hiking in Newfoundland for three weeks.
In the year 1939, he joined the Royal Air Force as an Aircraftman. In the year 1940, after he was trained on Hawker Harts, he was made an Acting Pilot Officer. In 1941 he was promoted as a Flying Officer. He started writing in the year 1942. His first writing work was published on August 1, 1942, titled as Shot Down Over Libya. (The book was initially titled A Piece Of Cake.)After the Second World War ended he was temporarily appointed as Wing Commander.
On July 2, 1953, Roald Dahl married Patricia Neal, an American actress at that time. The Gremlins was his first ever children story which was about mischievous little creatures. From then on he wrote some of the most loved children’s books like, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
He also wrote many short adult stories for magazines like Harpers, Ladies Home Journal, Collier’s, Playboy, and The New Yorker. One of his best known adult short stories was The Smoker which was filmed twice in the year 1960 and 1985. His collection of short stories, Tales of the Unexpected was made into a television series.
Roald Dahl died on 23 November, 1990 from myelodysplastic syndrome which is a blood disease. He was 74 years old when he died in Oxford. His body was buried at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Great Missenden.
