Syed Muhammad Mehdi known as Rais Amrohvi was a noted Pakistani scholar, Urdu poet and psychoanalyst.
He was born in Amroha, India in a family of scholars. There were many poets in his family. He settled in Karachi. He is particularly known for using Qatanigari style of writing. He penned a number of books on various subjects, like metaphysics, meditation, and yoga.
Mehdi also began working on the Urdu translation of the Bhagavad Gita. However, he was assassinated on September 22, 1988. It is believed that a religious fanatic was behind the murder.
