Pran Biography and latest books by Pran

Pran Kumar Sharma is better known as Pran, and his most famous comic series is undoubtedly the 1971-created Chacha Chaudhary. Pran was born in Kasur (present-day Pakistan) and pursued a graduation degree in Master of Arts (Political Science). He then did a four-year fine arts course from the Sir J.J School of Art, Mumbai.

Pran\'s first job was with Milap, a Delhi-based newspaper. He worked there on Daabu, a comic strip. Back then, Indian comic strips were inconspicuously absent from daily newspapers. It was thus a landmark moment in Indian comic book history when Pran first featured Chacha Chaudhary in the Hindi magazine Lotpot. The success of the strip led to the creation of other singular strip characters - the bumbling Shrimatiji, the \'hair over the eyes\' Billoo, Raman and others. It is thus no wonder that Pran has been called the \'Walt Disney of India.\'

The Chacha Chaudhary strip is now featured at the International Museum of Cartoon Art, USA. Pran myself has gone on to teach cartooning at the Media Institute named after him. He has his name in the Limca Book of Records and deservingly was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award 2001 by the Indian Institute of Cartoonists.
