Neelum Saran Gour has authored two novels: Speaking of \'62 (1995) and Virtual Realities (2002) and two collections of short stories - Grey Pigeon and Other Stories (1993) and Winter Companions and Other Stories (1997). Her writings are known and appreciated for capturing the absurdities and tragedies of human life. The characters of her works are occupants of small time India and goes far beyond metropolitan Indian writing in English.

Neelum was born of a Bengali mother and Hindi speaking father. Further, the fact that he was a classical musician, philosopher and mathematician exposed her to many facets of life and served as a huge influence on her writing. also, the schooling she received in a Catholic school run by German nuns broadened her vision. Neelum Gour is an academic and teaches at Allahabad University. She wrote her doctoral thesis on another Indian Writer in English, Raja Rao.

Her writings speak of the life of common Indians whose life revolves around bazaars, villages, various small towns. Her writing could also be seen as pointing towards a new genre of writing - nascent regional fiction in English or provincial literature.

Humour also plays an important role in her writings. Her vision of life is essentially funny. Her writing is often compared to Shashi Deshpande who also captures the rhythms of life of small town Indian minus the humour.
