Muriel Spark is remembered for her finely constructed, dark comic prose, especially for the unforgettable Miss Jean Brodie, one of the funniest and most sinister characters in modern fiction.

Spark\'s published her first work when she was 39, and after that she contributed several novels and short stories. In her stories the evil is never far away, violence a regular visitor and death a constant companion. Her themes are serious but handled rather lightly.

Her work includes more than 20 novels, several short stories, poetry, biography, plays and a few children\'s books.

Spark was born in Edinburgh on February 1, 1918, as the daughter of Bernard Camberg, an engineer based in Scotland. Spark was a good student at school.

Spark thought off her marriage as "disastrous," marriage who married at the age of 19 to Sydney Oswald Spark, 13 years her senior. He turned out to be mentally instable and violent. She ended her marriage seven years later. "He became a borderline case, and I didn\'t like what I found on either side of the border," she wrote in her autobiography, Curriculum Vitae. She had a son Robin from her marriage.

She shared strained relationship with her son. During one of her last book signings she responded to an enquiry from a journalist by saying \'I think I know how best to avoid him by now\'.
