Premchand was a celebrated writer of modern Hindi-Urdu literature. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist, he has been referred to as the Upanyas Samrat (Emperor of Novels).

Munshi Premchand was born as Dhanpat Rai and first began writing under the pseudonym Nawab Rai. He switched to Premchand after his short story anthology Soz-e-Watan was banned by the British.

His works include more than a dozen novels, about 250 short stories, many essays and translations of foreign literary works into Hindi.

Premchand is considered the first Hindi author who wrote using realism. His novels talk about the problems of the poor and the middle-class. He used literature for increasing public awareness about national and social issues. He wrote on topics, like corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, poverty, colonialism and India\'s freedom movement.

Many of Premchand\'s works were translated into English and Russian after his sad demise.
