Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi was the Father of the Nation. Gandhi led India to independence through movements for non-violence, civil rights and freedom across the world.

Gandhi was born and raised in a Hindu Bania community. He studied law in London. Gandhi became famous by fighting for the rights of Muslim and Hindu Indians in South Africa. On his return to India in 1915, he organised peasants to protest against land-taxes. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led campaigns for causes such as eradicating poverty, empowering women, building amity, ending untouchability and Swaraj—the independence of India from British Raj.

Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar that was then part of the Bombay Presidency, British India. His father, Karamchand Gandhi served as the diwan (a high official) in the Kathiawar Agency of British India. Jain ideas and practices influenced Gandhi, particularly through his mother, a spiritual Jain.

Gandhi was a prolific writer. His earliest writings were published in Hind Swaraj (Gujarati). For decades he edited newspapers, including Harijan, Indian Opinion, Young India, and Navajivan. In addition, he wrote letters to newspapers.
Gandhi also wrote several books including his autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth, Satyagraha in South Africa, Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule, and a paraphrase in Gujarati of John Ruskin\'s Unto This Last. Gandhi usually wrote in Gujarati, although he revised the Hindi and English translations of his books.

Gandhi\'s complete works were published by the Indian government under the name The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi.
