Marian Keyes Biography of Marian Keyes :

Marian Keyes (born 10 September 1963) is a popular Irish novelist and non-fiction writer, mainly known for her contribution to women\'s literature. Her book sales have crossed more than 22 million copies globally and have been translated into more than 30 languages. Her books Watermelon, Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married and This Charming Man, are particularly well known.

Keyes was born in Limerick and raised in Monkstown. She went about earning a law degree from Dublin University, but left for Ireland and became a waitress in London thinking that she did not deserve a well-paying career. Keyes began writing short stories after she found a job in an accounts office. During this time of her life, she struggled big time to give up alcohol but landed up in a rehabilitation center in Dublin, Ireland in 1995.

However, following a response from a publisher whom she\'d sent her manuscripts to, she began work on a book (Watermelon) that was her very first full length book. Keyes often shares that she "became a writer by accident".

Although many of her novels are comedies, they have dark hues in them as they deal with topics like domestic violence, drug abuse, mental illness, divorce and alcoholism, most of which are loosely based on her own life experiences. She is regarded by her fans as a pioneer of the so-called \'chick-lit\' genre; her stories usually revolve around a strong female character who overcomes numerous obstacles to achieve lasting happiness.

Personal life

Keyes currently lives in Dún Laoghaire with her husband Tony, after moving back from London in 1997. She suffers from severe clinical depression, and attempted suicide in 1994; she has since talked frankly about her battle with the disease.
