Johanna Spyri – born Johanna Louise Heusser – spent her childhood Hirzel, Switzerland. In fact she spent many summers in and around Chur in Graubünden, which became the living background of her stories later. After marriage while staying in the city of Zürich she started writing. Her first published work is A Leaf on Vrony\'s Grave; the following year along with few other works, Heidi was published and it became an instant hit. Heidi talks about a little orphan girl who lives with her grandpa in the Alps. The story was an enduring success, it not only portrays the landscape in a picture-perfect manner but also gives an idea about how kids see and understand life.

She was an avid reader and was much influenced by Droste-Hülshoff and Goethe. Later on she became acquainted with the revolutionary-minded writer Heinrich Leuthold. Her husband Johann Bernhard Spyri was the editor of "Eidgenössische Zeitung". Her first story A Leaf on Vrony\'s Grave appears in a partly anonymous manner with only her initials as J.S. Her foremost two stories - Stories for Children and for Those Who Like Children appear in Homeless. A vacation at Salis-Haus inspires her to write Heidi.
