An Hour Before Daylight: Memories of a Rural Boyhood
An Hour Before Daylight throws light on why a man who rose high still travels among people society often treats as low for consideration. Most older Americans are aware that Carter grew up in Georgia, joined the Navy and became governor of his home state before taking charge as a Commander-In-Chief. The book is a record of Southern family life in the first half of the last century. The aspects that make An Hour Before Daylight worth reading are Jimmy’s tales of how land and place shaped his early life, relationships between whites and blacks and the proof of how a rural farm family produced a world leader.
A Remarkable Mother
Bessie Lillian Gordy Jimmy Carter’s mother was born in rural Georgia in 1898. Her father was a government revenue officer and later a postmaster. Lillian grew up in a very busy, noisy household and never forgot her beginnings. Lillian entered nursing school and met her future husband Earl on a date but didn’t like him at first. However, Lillian and Earl married right after she completed her studies.
Lillian is undoubtedly remembered as a frank, down-to-earth senior citizen who just happened to be the mother of the President of the United States. During and after her son’s presidency, she became a goodwill ambassador who traveled the world and became a sought-after speaker. Often she talked about service in the Peace Corps or disregarding age to lead a full and adventurous life. No one was ever certain just what she might say. Not only was she a remarkable mother, Miss Lillian was a remarkable person.
