Jeffrey Archer was born on 15 April, 1940, in London, England. Essentially an English writer, Jeffrey was also a former politician. He was a Member of Parliament from 1969 to 1974 and the Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party from 1985 to 1986. He ran into several controversies and he was subsequently imprisoned for misinterpreting and distorting the course of justice which resulted ending his political career. Many consider that his life story would make an international bestseller.
Born to William Jeffrey and Lola, he was brought up by his mother after his father passed away when he was 15 years old. While in Somerset, he went to Wellington School and later graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford.
From then on, he went on to have several jobs which included training with the army but that only lasted a few months. He also worked as a Physical Education teacher in a Prep School in Hampshire and Independent School Dover College in Kent. He was very popular with the students and was considered to have very good motivation skills.
He was elected to the Greater London Council after he left Oxford and following this, three years later he became Member of Parliament for Louth when he was just 29 years old. While he was a Member of Parliament, he objected and voted against the restoration of capital punishment saying it was the most barbaric act in this world.
In the year 1974, after five years in the Commons, he made one of the worst moves in his political career, which was, his investment in Aquablast, a Canadian company. He was forced to resign from the House of Commons by himself after he was left with debts of 427,727 pounds, when the company in which he invested went into liquidation.
However at the age of 34, he was so determined to pay back his creditors that he started began writing novels. His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was written in his former Oxford Principal’s house. Within a year after the publication of his novel it was sold in 17 countries. It became such a huge success that it was made into a very successful serial for BBC Radio 4 which was later telecast by BBC in the year 1990.
His next bestseller was his second novel, ‘Shall We Tell the President?’ But his third novel, Kane and Abel became more successful than his previous two. It became a number on best-seller and sold over 3.5 million copies in paperback in the United Kingdom alone. This was also made into a television series by CBS in the year 1985.
This was followed by A Quiver Full of Arrows which was a collection of short stories. It gave him critical acclaim and three of the stories were made into a TV series called Tales of The Unexpected. Following this he wrote many other novels like The Prodigal Daughter, First Among Equals, A matter of Honour, A Twist in the Tale, As the Crow Flies and the rest.
When he was sent to prison regarding the perjury trial he wrote three books which were suppose to be his prison diaries. They were Hell-Belmarsh, Purgatory-Wayland, and Heaven-North Sea Camp.
At present Jeffrey lives with his family in London and Cambridge. He is happily married to his wife Dr. Mary Archer, and they are blessed with two sons, William and James.
