Today Jack Kerouac is known as being one of the pioneers of the Beat generation. He was an American writer and poet. His works include On the Road, Doctor Sax, The Dharma Bums, Mexico City Blues, The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, Visions of Cody, The Sea is My Brother, and Big Sur. His writings reflect on Catholicism, jazz, promiscuity, Buddhism, drugs, poverty, and travel. Jean-Louis \'Jack\' Kerouac was born in 1922 in Lowell, Massachusetts, to French-Canadian parents and he attended Columbia University. His mother was a devout Catholic and she left a remarkable impact on him.

Kerouac was known to have written all the time. He worked as a sports reporter for The Lowell Sun. He also worked in construction and food service and the U.S. Navy, and as a United States Merchant Marine. His first book was The Town and The City. It received good reviews but it was not a financial success. However he continued to write. He went on to write On the Road and many other books. He was friends with Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Herbert Huncke, and Gregory Corso.

Kerouac’s writing style was largely influenced by Jazz especially the Bebop genre. The term ‘beat generation’ was coined by Kerouac during a conversation with Huncke. Beat referred to a person with very little money and limited prospects. He died in 1969.
