Henry James, a renowned American-born writer is known for his amazingly extraordinary writing which brought an interestingly in-depth to narrative fictions. In addition to his many fiction writings, he also wrote autobiographies, biographies, and books on criticism and travel. His plays were moderately successful.
Henry James Jr. was born on April 15, 1843 to a very wealthy family. His Father Henry James Sr. was a very well known intellectual during his time in the mid-nineteenth century. During his youth days he traveled extensively between America and Europe and was tutored in London, Paris, Geneva, Bon and Bologna. When he was 19 years old he studied in Harvard very briefly since he was more interested in literature than studying law.
An avid reader, he devoured the classics of French, American, English, German and the translated Russian literature. In the year 1871, his first novel, Watch and Ward was published in the Atlantics which he had written during a trip through Venice and Paris. The novel revolves around the life of a bachelor who adopts a twelve year old girl and later on plans to get married to her.
In the year 1876, James moved from Paris to London. And then, from London to Rye, Sussex. In the year 1905, Henry James visited America after a gap of twenty five years and it was during this trip that he wrote Jolly Corner.
In the year 1879, one of his masterpiece Daisy Miller, was published. This was followed by The Portrait of a Lady in the year 1881. His next book, The Bostonian was out in 1886 which was set during the time of the rising movement of the feminist. His next book, What Maisie Knew was published in the year 1897. Following this, The Wings of The Dove came out in 1902, followed by The Ambassadors in 1903 which, according to him, was his best work ever.
From the year 1906 to 1910, many of his novels and books were revised by himself for the New York edition. He wrote an autobiography called A Small Boy and Others in 1913. The autobiography continued in the second part called Notes of a Son and Brother which came out in 1914. The third and final part of the book was called The Middle Years which was out in 1917 after his death.
On July 26, 1915, James became a British citizen. The main reason for taking the British citizenship was to show his loyalty to England after America refused to join the First World War. Apparently the First World War was a huge blow and a big shock to him. On December 2, 1915, Henry James suffered a stroke and eventually died on February 28, 1916 in London. His cremation took place in Golders Green Crematorium and his ashes were buried in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
