Gregory David Roberts is an Australian author popular for his voluminous novel Shantaram. He was a former heroin addict and convicted bank robber who escaped prison in 1980 and fled to India, where he has lived for a decade.

Roberts had become addicted to heroin after his divorce. To finance his addiction for drug Roberts began robbing institutions with insurance. He wore a three-piece suit, and he always said "please" and "thank you" to the people he was robbing. Roberts believed that this way he lessened the brutality of his acts.

In 1990, Roberts was captured in Frankfurt for smuggling heroin. He was extradited to Australia and lived in prison for six years.

After leaving prison, Roberts finished and published Shantaram. The book\'s name comes from the name his best friend\'s mother gave him, which means Man of Peace. There is debate as to how much of Shantaram is based on true events or a combination of real life and fantasy.

Roberts lives in Mumbai.
