Biography of Gita Mehta :
Gita Mehta (born in 1943) is an Indian writer, who was born in Delhi in well-known Oriya family of freedom fighters. She is the daughter of Biju Patnaik, an Indian independence activist, who was appointed the Chief Minister in post-independence Orissa. Her younger brother Naveen Patnaik is currently the Chief Minister of Orissa. She completed her education in India and at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Although being the wife of Sonny Mehta, head of the Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. an International publishing house, keeps her in close association with people from the same fraternity, she has emerged a writer in her own right. Her works have been translated into as many as 21 languages and have appeared on the bestseller lists in Europe, US and India. The subject of both her fiction and non-fiction is India: its culture and history, and the Western perception of the country. Her works depict India seen from her journalistic and political background.
She has produced and/or directed more than 10 television documentaries for UK, European and U.S. networks. During 1970-1971 she was a war correspondent for the US television network NBC. Her film compilation of Bangladesh revolution, Dateline Bangladesh, was shown in cinema theatres both in India and abroad.
Gita Mehta lives in New York, London and New Delhi. In an interview Gita Mehta says, "There\'s a tremendous richness to living on three continents. The magic of America is the can-do-ism gives me the belief that anything is possible. Each time I finish a book I think I will never write another, America makes me think, \'Yeah, I\'ll have another shot.\' London\'s great virtue is that, as the capital of an empire, its libraries have staggering material on India. And because of the British reticence, it\'s easy to be alone and write there. My heart is in India so when I\'m there I don\'t write, I just let it all seep in through my pores."
Her first book, Karma Cola: Marketing the Mystic East (1979), took a mocking look at the Western belief that spiritual enlightenment could be acquired instantly by hopping on to a jet and finding the easiest available guru. The book Raj (1989) covered the 50 years preceding Indian independence through the fictional character of Jaya Singh, daughter and wife of maharajahs who ruled two of India\'s nominally independent kingdoms. A River Sutra (1993), blended Indian mythology with hard hitting depictions of love in its many forms. The book speaks about the life of a disillusioned bureaucrat who learns about life from the stories of six pilgrims heading to the banks of India\'s holiest river.
