Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American author-cum-journalist. Hemingway produced most of his fictional work between the 1920s and 1950s. He also went about bagging the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections and two non-fiction works. Three novels, four collections of short stories and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature.

Hemingway was raised in Illinois. After high school he worked as a reporter for a couple of months for The Kansas City Star. He then left for working as a World War I ambulance driver. In 1918, Hemingway was seriously injured and he decided to return home. These wartime experiences that he experienced at close quarters formed the crux for his popular novel A Farewell to Arms. In 1922, he wedded Hadley Richardson, who he eventually divorced.

After his divorce in 1927 from Hadley Richardson, Hemingway married Pauline Pfeiffer. They divorced after he returned from the Spanish Civil War where he worked as a journalist. It was during this time that he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls. Martha Gellhorn became his third legally wedded wife in 1940. They too divorced when he met Mary Welsh in London during the Second World War.

Shortly after the publication of The Old Man and the Sea in 1952, Hemingway went on safari to Africa that left him very ill. In 1959 he moved to Idaho, where he committed suicide by shooting himself in 1961.

Hemingway called his writing style the iceberg theory: where the facts float above water. This concept is also referred to as the theory of omission. Hemingway believed the writer could describe one thing though an entirely different development occurs below the surface.
