Edgar Lawrence Doctorow or E.L. Doctorow is an American writer. His novels include Welcome to Hard Times, Big as Life, The Book of Daniel, Ragtime, Loon Lake, World\'s Fair, Billy Bathgate, The Waterworks, City of God, The March, and Homer & Langley. His other writings are The Songs of Billy Bathgate, Lives of the Poets: Six Stories and a Novella, Jolene: A Life, Sweet Land Stories, All The Time In The World: New And Selected Stories, Drinks Before Dinner, American Anthem, Poets and Presidents, Reporting the Universe, Wakefield, All the Time in the World, and Unexceptionalism: A Primer.

Doctorow was born in New York and attended Kenyon College in Ohio and Columbia University. He served in the United States Army for a while. He moved on to work as an editor with the New American Library (NAL) and worked with Ian Fleming and Ayn Rand. He has taught at Sarah Lawrence College, the Yale School of Drama, the University of Utah, the University of California, Irvine, and Princeton University. He currently serves as the Loretta and Lewis Glucksman Professor of English and American Letters at New York University.

Doctorow’s book Ragtime was listed as one of the best 100 books of the 20th century by the Modern Library Editorial Board.
