Devaki Nandan Khatri (1861–1913) was an Indian writer, who was the pioneer of popular novelists in the modern Hindi language. He authored mystery novels in Hindi. Chandrakanta is his most noteworthy work of fiction.
Khatri was born at Samastipur, Bihar. He started a printing press called Lahari and started a Hindi monthly, Sudarshan, in 1898.
It is said that people were so mesmerised by his work Chandrakanta that they started learning Hindi just to read the works. Khatri never wrote any of his books at one go. He wrote bayaans (chapters) on the run from the British.
