Chief Scout, adventurer, explorer, author, motivational speaker, and television presenter, Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls is a personality who wears several hats. He is synonymous with the Man vs. Wild series on television which is known as Born Survivor in the UK. He spent his childhood in Donaghadee in Northern Ireland and Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. He was nicknamed Bear by his older sister and the name stuck. He studied at Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College. Later he went to study at Birkbeck College at the University of London. He speaks English, Spanish, and French.

After his schooling, Bear Grylls contemplated joining the Indian army. That was the time he went hiking around Sikkim, Assam, and West Bengal. He joined the British army and he served in the United Kingdom Special Forces. He learned to skydive and earned a dan black belt in Shotokan karate as a teenager.  He broke three of his vertebrae at a parachuting accident in Zambia. He has written Facing up (known in the US as the Kid who climbed Everest), Facing the Frozen Ocean, Mission Survival: Gold of the Gods, Mission Survival: Way of the Wolf, Mission Survival: Sands of the Scorpion and Mission and Survival: Tracks of the Tiger.
