The famous film actor, Balraj Sahni, was also a gifted writer. Hailing from a Punjabi Khatri family from Bhera, he completed his schooling from Rawalpindi to study at Lahore. He completed his Masters degree in English Literature from Lahore, and then went back to Rawalpindi. He also held a Bachelor\'s degree in Hindi from Punjab University. He married Damayanti Sahni after college. His early writings were in English; though later he switched to Punjabi and made his mark as a writer. In 1960, after a visit to Pakistan, he wrote Mera Pakistani Safar. One of his book, ‘Mera Rusi Safarnama’ written after a tour of the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1969 won acclaim with the \'Soviet Land Nehru Award\'. He contributed poems and short stories in magazines, and also penned his autobiography called Meri Filmi Aatmakatha. He also contributed to the Punjabi magazine Preetlari.
