Aung San Suu Kyi was born in 1945 in Yangon (former Rangoon).  Her father was Aung San was the leading architect of Burmese independence, the founder of the modern Burmese army and he was the driving force behind Myanmar’s independence from British rule in 1947. He was assassinated by his rivals six months after Burma gained independence. She grew up with her brothers and her mother Khin Kyi, the former Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal. She studied at the former Methodist English High School (now called Basic Education High School No. 1 Dagon) and at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, New Delhi. After school, she studied Political Science at the Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi. She went on to study further at St Hugh\'s College, Oxford and studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. She received her PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Aung San Suu Kyi married Dr. Michael Aris, a scholar of Tibetan culture who lived in Bhutan. She worked with the United Nations, New York for three years and subsequently worked at the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS) in Shimla.

In 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar to take care of her ailing mother while the pro-democracy protests were on. This was the time she decided when she needed to speak participate in the movement. She met her husband for the last time during the Christmas of 1995. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it ultimately took his life. She was placed under house arrest and despite Aris’ desire to travel to Myanmar at that time fell into the deaf ears of the Burmese government. The latter said Myanmar did not have the adequate healthcare facilities while Suu Kyi was free to travel to see him and it meant that she would not be allowed to return to Myanmar. She was placed under house arrest and released in 2010.
