Aravind Adiga is an Indian author and a journalist. He was a former correspondent in India for TIME magazine; his articles have also appeared in publications like The Financial Times, The Independent, and The Sunday Times. The White Tiger was his debut novel which won him the Man Booker Prize in the year 2008.
Aravind Adiga was born 23 October, 1974, in Chennai, India. His parents Dr. K. Madhava Adiga and Usha Adiga were both Kannadigas who hailed from Mangalore. He grew up in Mangalore and studied in Canara High School. Later on he shifted to St. Aloysius High School where he finished his high school in 1990. His family later on immigrated to Sydney, Australia, where he attended James Ruse Agricultural High School. He then moved to New York and attended Columbia College in Columbia University. He graduated as a salutatorian in 1997 from that college. He was also tutored by Hermione Lee when he studied at Magdalen College in Oxford.
He started his journalistic career as a financial journalist, as he interned at the Financial Times. With his works published in the Financial Times and Money, he covered areas like investment and the stock market. It was during this time that he got to interview Donald Trump, among others. The review which he wrote on previous Booker Prize winner Peter Carey\'s book, Oscar and Lucinda, appeared in The Second Circle, which was an online literary review. Subsequently Adiga was hired by Time, where he worked as a correspondent for three years, before taking to freelancing. It was during his freelance period that he wrote The White Tiger.
His debut novel The White Tiger received huge critical acclaim. The book won him the 2008 Man Booker Prize award. After Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai, he was the Fourth Indian-born author to win this prestigous award. His novel shows the difference between the lead character Balram’s rural poverty life and the rise of India as a modern global economy.
It was announced on April 2009 that the book would be adapted into a feature film. The Indian hardcover edition of The White Tiger sold over 200,000 copies. His next novel, Between The Assasinations was published in India in November 2008, while it was released in the US and UK in 2009. The book featured 12 interlinked stories.
Aravind Adiga has also some short stories to his credits like: The Sultan’s Battery, Smack, Last Christmas in Bandra, and The Elephant. Currently he lives in Mumbai, India.
