Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a critically acclaimed and landmark Russian dramatist and author, who is counted among the greatest writers of short stories. His career as a playwright produced four celebrated works and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics even today. Chekhov practiced medicine throughout his literary career and stated: "Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my mistress."


Chekhov initially began writing short stories primarily for financial gain, but his artistic ambition grew considerably as he wrote. His originality consists in an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, later adopted by James Joyce and other modernists. Chekhov did not use the traditional story structure and made no apologies for posing difficulties to the reader. The believed that the role of an artist was to quiz readers, not to answer questions.


Anton Chekhov’s father, Pavel Yegorovich Chekhov, ran a grocery store. He was a devout orthodox Christian and a physically abusive father. Many believe that this laid the basis of hypocrisy in Chekhov’s  writings.


In 1884, Chekhov qualified as a doctor, which he considered his principal profession though he made little money from it and treated the poor free. Chekhov\'s work as a doctor, enriched his writing by showing him the real face of Russian society: for example, he witnessed at first hand the peasants\' unhealthy and cramped living conditions, which he recalled in his short story Peasants.


Chekhov confessed, "I have written my stories the way reporters write up their notes about fires—mechanically, half-consciously, caring nothing about either the reader or myself.”


In 1901 Chekhov married actress, Olga Knipper, who had performed in his plays. But their marital life was short lived, as Chekhov died on July 1904, of Tuberculosis.


Neighbors, Ward Number Six, The Black Monk, The Murder, and Ariadne are some his famous short stories.
