Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born to Clarissa Margaret Boehmer and Frederick Alvah Miller, a stockbroker from America. However Agatha never claimed citizenship from United States even though her father was an American. She was the youngest of the three children. During the First World War, she worked as a nurse. She went on to work in a pharmacy, which later on influenced her in her writings as many of the murder scenes in her books were carried out with poison.
Agatha married Archibald Christie on December 25, 1914. Together they had a daughter - Rosalind Hicks. However the marriage came to an end in 1928 after she found out that her husband was cheating on her.
In the year 1930, Christie married Max Mallowan, an archaeologist.
Before she divorced her husband she had already written six novels, a number of short stories and a collection of stories.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles was her first novel which was published in 1920. In this novel she introduced the character Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective, which went on to appear in more than 40 of her books, the last one being Curtain which was published in 1975.
Her character Poirot was a comic character that had a head shaped like an egg. The character Poirot had a friend named Captain Hastings who represented the “idiotic narrator”. Hercule Poirot always came to a conclusion after observing the things around him and the behavior of the people around him.
Christie’s next famous character Miss Marple was introduced in The Tuesday Night Club which was published in the year 1927.
Her two novels, Curtain and Sleeping Murder were intended to be the last cases of Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Maple, were written during the Second World War. However she sealed both the books in a bank vault for more than thirty years and published them much later after she realized that writing novels was too hard for her.
Hercule Poirot became the only fictional character which was given an obituary in The New York Times after Curtains was published in 1975.
After the huge success of Curtain, she permitted the release of Sleeping Murder but she died on January 12, 1976 in her house in Winterbrook before the book was published. She was buried in Cholsey in a churchyard.
Out of all the novels that Agatha Christie wrote, the famous ones include: The Murder of Roger Acroyd, Death on The Nile, Ten Little Niggers and Murder on The Orient Express.
